Summary of the final episode
The protagonist, Sanpo Shimazaki, has saved many climbers as a mountain rescue volunteer. In the final chapter, Sanpo heads to a snowy mountain in bad weather to rescue a lost parent and child. He risks his own life to encourage and guide them to safety. However, after the rescue, Sanpo reaches his physical limit and dies alone in the snowy mountains. After his death, the story depicts the people he saved and his friends who inherit his will continuing to climb their own mountains. The story concludes with Sanpo’s words, “Mountains are wonderful,” suggesting that his will has been passed on to many people and that the mountains will continue to be “everyone’s mountains.”
Review of the final episode
I couldn’t stop my tears at the shocking conclusion of Sanpo’s death in the final chapter. I was deeply moved again by his self-sacrificing spirit and deep love for the mountains. However, I was also saved by the fact that the story depicted the people he saved moving forward with their lives, rather than just dwelling on his death. Sanpo’s words, “Mountains are wonderful,” feel like they tell the entire story of this work. It was a wonderful final chapter that taught me the preciousness of life, the harshness of nature, and the warmth of people.
